About
Meet the Coach Behind Chess Labs
Over twenty years of teaching, competing and organizing chess events.

Your coach
William Torres
Over 20 years of experience coaching youth and adults, from beginners to tournament players. Peak USCF rating 2060, with blitz ratings above 2200.
I focus on building thinking skills, not memorization.
I started coaching because I saw how many players study hard and still stay stuck. They watch videos, learn openings and play a lot, but nobody has looked at how they actually think at the board.
So every lesson I teach starts with your own games. We find the pattern behind your mistakes, build a plan, and turn it into work you can do before we meet again. I enjoy working with ambitious kids, returning adults and tournament players alike.

Method
How William Coaches
The same approach, whatever your level.
Start with Your Games
Lessons begin with the games you actually play, not a generic course.
Find the Pattern
Together you spot the mistakes that repeat and the ideas that are missing.
Build the Habit
You leave each lesson with a clear task, so study time goes where it counts.
Beyond the Lessons
Tournament Director
William runs events as a USCF tournament director, so he knows the rules, the pressure and the pace of real competition.
Over-the-Board Experience
More than a hundred tournaments give him a feel for what works at the board, not only in theory.
Youth and Adults
He coaches children and adult players, and adapts the pace and the language to each student.
